The 15 Series X Games That Just Might Help Xbox Reclaim Its Former Glory (2023)

The 15 Series X Games That Just Might Help Xbox Reclaim Its Former Glory (1)

Xbox always had a little more of a liberal method in naming its consoles than PlayStation. While PlayStation simply went up in numbers, Xbox worked in degrees, then word-numbers, then did a naming-method overhaul with the Xbox Series X. Admittedly, that hurt to say aloud at first, but it's been growing on me. And while the console wars are still in full swing, the Series X is part of an industry-wide pivot towards (finally) putting players first instead of cash.

With the Series X, Xbox is doing a full 360 from its Xbox One launch, which was notoriously hated, and bringing a lot that'll be new to gamers. The brand has consistently given us backwards compatibility, which allows the previous one or two generations' games to be played on a newer console. The Series X will have backwards compatibility, too. Then, with Xbox's Game Pass, which offers a Netflix-like subscription service for a ton of killer games (including the likes of Halo, Gears, and Sea of Thieves), Series X will also launch with all those titles. Along with that, many of the games will be enhanced for the Series X, and some cross-generation games will see a smart delivery system—meaning if you buy a game like Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, you’ll get the enhanced Xbox Series X version for free.

All these tools for crossplay and cross saves and next gen upgrades help Xbox gamers save a ton of money—for once, you won’t have to put in an additional $700 buying games you already own—while also giving the Series X a hefty library right off the bat, which cleanly avoids the number-one problem new consoles usually face. In fact, it might just be one of the smoothest console launches in history. With that in mind, here are some of the most exciting titles confirmed for the Xbox Series X (and yes, even exclusives, an area where Xbox has traditionally struggled), which ought to make for a much tighter console race than years before and help Xbox backtrack to its glory days.

1

Halo Infinite

Xbox Series X Release Date: Holiday 2020

The big guy: Master Chief. Halo Infinite was announced back at the Game Awards alongside the new console, and wow does it look badass. While Xbox may fall short compared to its Nintendo and PlayStation competitors when it comes to exclusives, Halo has consistently been such a strong pillar that it single-handedly draws the masses to Xbox. There’s no doubt Halo Infinite is going to show off the massive power of the Series X.

2

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2

Xbox Series X Release Date: Holiday 2020

One of the few Xbox exclusives—and one of the most remarkable trailers we’ve seen from a next gen game so far—Hellblade is getting a sequel, complete with masterful graphics and the return of that action RPG gameplay. With a holiday 2020 release date, Hellblade 2 seems primed to be a Series X launch title.

3

The Medium

Xbox Series X Release Date: Holiday 2020

This game is, believe it or not, a biopic of TLC’s Long Island Medium. We've never heard the story before. It will be stunning, and shocking. Okay, it’s not that, not even a little. This is a psychological horror game. It looks spooky as hell, but we love a good thriller.

4

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Xbox Series X Release Date: Launch title

The Yakuza series continues right at the console's launch with the zany, beat-'em-up action and cutting-edge graphics that we’ve come to expect. This new game looks like it'll feature some smooth-as-butter combat, and the trailer showcases a choir belting "Ode to Joy," a truck tearing rubber, a cityscape, and text that reads, “Life is an adventure.” So yeah, I’m in.

5

Cyberpunk 2077

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA

CD Projekt Red’s space epic Cyberpunk 2077 follows the insane success of The Witcher, and it feels like we’ve been waiting forever for it. Finally, we're in the endgame. While it's unclear when the enhanced version will release on Series X, if you get the game at launch on your current Xbox One, it'll have free smart delivery for the enhanced Series X version.

6

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBD 2020

Sneaking and stabbing—like it or not, it’s Assassin's Creed. This time we’re headed to the time of beards and brawn, when Vikings ruled their section of the earth. Fingers crossed we’ll see some more ship action similar to that in Black Flag.

7

Madden 21

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBD 2020

This time around, Lamar Jackson is at the helm and there's a swanky cover redesign, but it’s still Madden, and we get it every year like clockwork. With 21, you won't have to buy it twice if you upgrade consoles, because believe it or not, EA is turning the other cheek and allowing smart delivery onto the Series X.

8

Fortnite

Xbox Series X Release Date: Launch title

Arguably the biggest game since Pokémania, Fortnite will be coming to next gen with a whole new engine, the upgraded Unreal 4. Who knows how long Fortnite will hang around, but it seems like we're stuck with incessant dabbing and flossing for the long haul.

9

Scarlet Nexus

Xbox Series X Release Date: Holiday 2020

Three (and a half) words: stylish, anime, action-RPG. Those who want them should already be hooked on Scarlet Nexus. The game mixes animated sections with its full gameplay, similar to the Tales series, and has combat that promises to put the new hardware to work. Scarlet Nexus will also feature smart delivery.

10

Outriders

(Video) Assassin's Creed Valhalla Live Play Part 2 | Xbox Series X Hang Out

Xbox Series X Release Date: Launch title

Square Enix is bringing this class-based, third-person, over-the-shoulder shooter to the Series X. Granted, the next gen is stacked with co-op shooters, but Outriders is at the top of that list in terms of promise. With apocalyptic Mad Max vibes, and by the looks of it, a lot of class variety, it should be stellar.

11

Watch Dogs: Legion

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA 2020

Watch Dogs: Legion boasts an extremely alive world, where every NPC has a backstory, and is playable and recruitable to your team. Centered around technology-based warfare in a cybernetic city, the game was in pretty solid shape during test runs last year, and we can assume it's only gotten better since.

12

Rainbow Six Siege

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA (shortly after launch)

It’s hard to believe this objective-based squad shooter is five years old and still getting as much support as it is. And that it is coming to the next gen shortly after launch. Whether the game will be graphically updated or not is yet to be revealed, but the title will feature crossplay with the previous gen servers.

13

Rainbow Six Quarantine

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA 2020

(Video) Assassins Creed Valhalla Stories - Glory Regained - Part 15

Every Halloween, Rainbow Six gets outfitted with frightening zombie apocalypse vibes, requiring that you work as a team to take on hordes of the undead. Well, from what we can tell, that mode is getting a full game with Rainbow Six Quarantine. This title takes the best of the Siege team-based gameplay but pins you up against zombie AI, so if you're more of a player-versus-environment type, it'll be ideal for you.

14

Gods & Monsters

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA 2020

Ubisoft is having a huge start on the next gen, with Watch Dogs and Rainbow Six taking it in a completely different direction. This Breath of the Wild-style, Greek mythology-inspired action RPG seems gorgeous and also like it could be an absolute blast. There's a big, scary Medusa slug, so I may personally have to skip it, but you might like it.

15

Chorus

Xbox Series X Release Date: TBA 2021

We’re still a little while out from Chorus’s release, but 2021 is heading towards us faster than any of us realize. This remarkably stylistic ship shooter comes from Deep Silver, the folks who brought us Saints Row, Shenmue, and Metro Exodus, and it looks like it's going to make full use of the next gen's impressive tech.
